Despite February containing the shortest amount of days in the year, millions are born during the month – including two former U.S. presidents.
People born in February can have one of two astrological signs: Aquarius (Feb. 1 to 18) or Pisces (Feb. 19 to 28). The violet and primrose flowers also represent those born in February.
Each month also has at least one gemstone. So, what about February's birthstone? Here's what you need to know about February's birthstone, including its colors and symbolism.
February birthstone
The birthstone for February is the amethyst. This variety of quartz comes in a range of purple hues, from lilac to dark purple. The finest amethysts can be reddish purple or purple with no gradient (known as "color zoning"), according to the Geological Institute of America (GIA).
Amethysts were associated with the Greek god of wine, Bacchus, since the gem's coloring is similar to the alcohol. This coincides with its name, which is derived from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning "a remedy against drunkenness," GIA reports. It was believed wearing amethyst would "ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus," according to the American Gem Society.
Through the centuries, amethysts have held a special significance among royalty. Catherine the Great of Russia had several pairs of earrings and necklaces adorned with the stone. Another iconic piece of amethyst jewelry is the Cartier-designed bib necklace worn by Wallis, Duchess of Windsor, at a gala in Versailles in 1953.
Amethysts are mined across the globe. Until the 19th century, Russia was the primary source of the gem. Now, it is found in Brazil, Bolivia, Zambia and Arizona, according to GIA.
The stone symbolizes personal empowerment and inner strength, GIA reports. Just like its month, February's birthstone has been associated with love. According to one legend, St. Valentine wore an amethyst ring that featured a carving of Cupid, the International Gem Society reports.
Besides being the birthstone for February, amethysts are also a traditional gift for the sixth wedding anniversary.
